“Strangulation: All Things Legal” was presented in Charleston on Oct. 25 by the West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, West Virginia Division of Justice and Community Services, WV Supreme Court of Appeals, WV Prosecuting Attorney’s Institute and the WV Regional Community Policing Institute. Gael Strack, J.D., CEO and co-founder of National Family Justice Center Alliance, provided the 5-hour training.
Attending the training on behalf of Women’s Resource Center and Beckley Police Department were Maria Madariaga, Patricia Bailey, Katrina Johannesen, Dee Sizemore, Linda Godbey, Angel Davis, Victoria Bradshaw, Twanna Warner-Burton, Jessica Dunkley, and Cindy Butcher from WRC and Captain C.D. Mullens, VAWA domestic violence law enforcement officer from Beckley Police Department.
“I don’t think most people realize how deadly strangulation is and can be,” said Patricia Bailey, executive director of Women’s Resource Center.
“Loss of consciousness and death can occur in minutes. There have been recent cases of strangulation in our service area, so this training was very timely. I was very pleased to learn how seriously other states are taking strangulation and that these states are pushing for tough legislation where strangulation is concerned, so we are definitely looking forward to seeing that legislation,” said Bailey.
