CHEYENNE, WY – A Senate bill making Domestic Violence laws more uniform and increasing the penalties is moving on to the Wyoming House.
In a unanimous vote on Friday, File 19 passed a third and final reading in the Senate.
The measure looks to add harsher punishments to Domestic Violence Crimes including domestic battery and assault, strangulation, and stalking.
Member of the sponsoring committee and Laramie County Senator, Tara Nethercott says every session there have been calls to our legislature to address these issues. Nethercott went on to say this measure provides a consistent sentence structure associated with these crimes.
The measure would also add strangulation and the 3rd Domestic Battery charge to the violent felony list.
Nethercott says that support of this bill in the Senate shows that Wyoming is committed to providing a safe environment to preventing domestic violence and making sure the state is safe.
If passed through the House and signed by the Governor, the changes will take effect on July 1.
