North Berwick Man gets 9 Years for Beating Ex-Girlfriend

    June 3, 2016

    By: Nok-Noi Ricker
ALFRED, Maine — A former North Berwick man with a history of assaults was sentenced Thursday to 14 years behind bars, with all but nine years suspended, for injuring his former girlfriend in 2014, according to York County District Attorney Kathryn Slattery.
Lee Perry, 47, was sentenced Wednesday by Justice Wayne Douglas for beating and attempting to strangle his girlfriend on Dec. 6, 2014, in North Berwick. In addition to the prison time, Perry also was sentenced to four years of probation upon his release.
“After hearing the evidence that the defendant beat his victim, spit on her, strangled her, broke her wrist, and cut her with a knife, the jury returned verdicts of guilty,” Slattery said in a Thursday news release.
The North Berwick Police Department handled the investigation. Perry’s York County Superior Court trial started on May 23 and lasted four days.
Perry, who has a previous conviction for aggravated assault, last month was convicted of three counts of aggravated assault, one count of domestic violence criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, one count of domestic violence assault, one count of domestic violence with a dangerous weapon and one count of domestic violence reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
The first aggravated assault count resulted in the longest sentence, nine years, and the second aggravated assault count added five years, all suspended, and the four years of probation. The other four crimes resulted in concurrent sentences.
Shira Burns and Joshua Saucier, assistant district attorneys for York County, prosecuted the case and Portland attorney Robert Andrews represented Perry.
