Safety for Survivors: Getting Guns Out of the Hands of Abusers
Course Description:
Join the Family Justice Center Alliance for a 90-minute webinar with the Nashville Family Safety Center and Oklahoma City’s Palomar Family Justice Center. Diane Lance and Becky Bullard from Nashville will discuss how to handle firearms in domestic violence situations, initiatives to dispose of firearms, dispossession procedures, and flagging programs, including barriers and strategies. Kim Garrett and Bob Troester from Oklahoma will cover their initiative that brings together law enforcement and prosecutors to use the power of federal prosecution to address particularly violent domestic abusers who use firearms in the abuse of their victims, focusing on how to hold domestic abusers accountable and safely remove their guns.
Course Presenters:
Casey Gwinn – Casey Gwinn is the President and Co-Founder of the Alliance. He is the visionary behind the Family Justice Center Movement, first proposing the concept of the Family Justice Center model in 1989. Casey founded Camp HOPE America in 2003. He is a national expert on domestic violence dynamics, including investigation and prosecution, the handling of non-fatal strangulation cases, and is one of the leading thinkers in the country on the science of hope. Prior to this position, Casey was the elected San Diego City Attorney.
