OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — Congresswoman Kendra Horn calls on congressional leadership to include funding in the next stimulus bill for Family Justice Centers, such as Palomar in Oklahoma City.
These centers help victims and survivors of domestic violence access the resources they need in one place. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and stay at home orders, Family Justice Centers have seen a dramatic increase in domestic violence cases, with Centers across the country reporting an increase in requests for services of 20 to 30 percent.
“The integrated and innovative model of Family Justice Centers saves lives and empowers victims of domestic violence every day.” said Congresswoman Kendra Horn. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen a dramatic increase in the rate of domestic violence in our communities. Right now victims of domestic violence need our help more than ever to escape abusive and dangerous partners, protect their children, and find safe housing. We cannot let them fall through the cracks during this time of crisis. I am inspired by the critical services provided by organizations like Palomar in Oklahoma City, and I will continue fighting to ensure they have the resources and tools they need to support victims and survivors. While the CARES Act made important investments in the Family Violence Prevention Services Act and in the National Domestic Violence Hotline, we still have work to do supporting our nation’s Family Justice Centers.”
At Family Justice Centers, survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and elder abuse have access to critically important wraparound resources. Survivors can receive assistance in obtaining temporary restraining orders, find safe housing, meet their prosecutors, work with detectives, and obtain forensic exams.
