Statistics show without intervention, 75% of children living in a domestic violence household will repeat the cycle of domestic violence as a batterer or victim. That’s according to SafeNest.
Domestic violence is an epidemic that impacts many children.
Without intervention, the cycle can keep going.
“Get addicted to opioids, be suicidal, be incarcerated and the list really goes one. Mental health becomes a factor,” said Liz Ortenburger, CEO of SafeNest.
But where there’s pain, there is also hope.
“It’s about giving kids an opportunity to see a different future for themselves,” Ortenburger said.
Ortenburger sees a positive outcome with Camp Hope Las Vegas.
It’s a brand-new intervention program helping children between ages 7 through 12 who’ve been impacted by domestic violence.
Right now, volunteer camp counselors are needed.
“Spend some time making a difference in a child’s life,” she said.
It’s a start to healing and a chance for kids to break away from the cycle of domestic violence.
“The more that we can build a child’s hope score even with these adverse childhoods experiences, the better chance they have of having a successful life,” she said.
