FRANKFORT, Ky. (WBKO) — Kentucky’s Senate passed SB 70 today to address non-fatal strangulation.
The piece of legislation would make the crime a felony.
It would also amend the legal definitions of domestic violence and abuse, and dating violence and abuse, to include strangulation.
Bill sponsors say 38 states already have laws specifically criminalizing strangulation.
It was passed by a 31-4 vote.
One senator said she voted against the bill because she said it would define strangulation so broadly that it would have the ability to be applied to situations outside of domestic violence.
The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
