4 crime victim groups to split $2M seized from gambling

    September 26, 2020

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Four organizations that help victims of crime are splitting $2 million seized from an illegal gambling operation.

WTOC-TV reports Chatham County District Attorney Meg Heap was recently notified that her office could distribute the money.

The Rape Crisis Center, Coastal Children’s Advocacy Center, Safe Shelter and the Chatham County Family Justice Center will each get $500,000.

The four agencies each say they’ve been struggling to raise money this year because of COVID-19.

“We were going to go into 2021 $300,000 in debt because we couldn’t have our gala,” Safe Shelter Executive Director Cheryl Branch said.

The agencies say demand for their services haven’t declined, though.

“We still see the child molestations, we still see the sexual assault of children, we still see the physical abuse of children. This money really is going to take care of those kids,” Coastal Children’s Advocacy Center Executive Director Rose Grant-Robinson said.
